I was born in Upstate New York along with my older sister and brother and younger sister. My parents and grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins were all born and raised in New York and Pennsylvania. My siblings and I have heard stories about life in Upstate New York our whole lives, but we did not return until adulthood. The three younger siblings were born in California in the sixties after my family moved there in the late fifties.
Moving to California was supposed to give our family a new start in a place that was growing and rich with opportunities. The real reasons were revealed many years later when the family was going through the hardest times in our lives.
I was raised with six children in a Christian home. My father was always looking for the pot at the end of the rainbow. My mother tried being supportive as she managed a household and kept the family together. We moved seven times in ten years from Bakersfield to Northern California. The right job just never seemed to come so we were never in one place for very long. Dad and mom never fully explained the reasons for the lost jobs, for the repossessed furniture or cars. They didn’t share the true story of our money problems with their children.
Our father moved us out to Southern Florida to pursue work teaching in private flight schools. It was there that we discovered he had turned our lives upside down by creating another family that he kept a secret from us. When the truth came out several years after arriving in Florida…my father had made quite a tangled mess for his wives and children. My father had two other children to whom we would later contact and include in our family. Because of the strength of our mothers and faith in God, we will strive to recover from our hurt for the rest of our lives.
Our Christian mother raised us to believe and trust in God for all of our needs. We grew up to know how to cope with tough times and know that God would always be there. We learned to be creative without much money. We were allowed to play and use our imaginations. We were taught to survive and thrive and grow into successful adults.
I grew up wanting to help others through hard times. I graduated from a small Christian College in Portland Oregon and became a Christian Counselor. I obtained a minor in Bible and utilize its wisdom and truths to help my clients. I received my Masters from George Fox University in Counseling Psychology. I use Play therapy and NLP techniques to help clients through childhood hurts and issues.
I also enjoy teaching a variety of subjects in classes, seminars, and retreats. I believe that the principles of the Bible can aid others to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. The Biblical truths of Jesus’ teachings are the basis of Christian Counseling.
I try to start each day as a mission to help others in their lives. I believe that I am a child of God and people are my ministry. I want to help make this world a better place. As long as I am alive, my efforts will be to realize that desire every day.
